Master’s Thesis student: Modelling and Integration of Steering Systems for Driving Simulators (M/F/D)

Thesis description

The steering system is a key element of the vehicle, and as one the main control inputs during day-to-day driving, it must allow to command the vehicle with confidence and communicate any necessary information back to the driver. Proper development of the steering is therefore crucial to achieving customer expectations and brand DNA.


The scope of the thesis will be to implement and validate a steering model representative of a real system and integrated into offline as well as Driver-in-Loop Real-Time simulation for vehicle development, in line with Hyundai standards and procedures.

You will be responsible for

  • Research on steering modeling, EPS control software modeling and steering feel development.
  • Modelling and simulation of electro-mechanical steering systems
  • Development and parametrisation of the models around current Hardware-in-Loop data extraction procedures
  • Validation against Hardware-in-Loop and real vehicles, to ensure a proper representation of the physical system
  • Integration into development cycle, using both Driver-in-Loop and offline simulation

Who we are looking for

  • Master’s student in Engineering focused course (eg. Automotive, Mechanical, Mechatronics)
  • Very good understanding of physical system modelling, experience in steering modelling preferred
  • Experience in Matlab / Simulink
  • Experience in MSc Adams Car (or similar Multi-Body Software) strongly preferred
  • Knowledge in control theory and controller design strongly preferred
  • Good command of English language
